This unit, Suppose, in our Humanities class Rhetoric, we studied the practice of Rhetoric and learned how to appeal to our audience's senses of Pathos (feelings), Ethos (trust), and Logos (logic). For our action project, our goal was to create a rhetorically successful speech for one of the gubernatorial candidates running in Illinois. I decided to write and record a speech for Tio Hardiman, a democratic candidate. I wanted to learn more about him as a political candidate, as I have really only known him as an activist. This speech was designed to be spoken at a protest or march, as Hardiman is known for leading them. I decided to focus on the topics of police reform and justice reform because Hardiman is a huge activist for both, and they are a very large part of his campaign.
I have very much enjoyed this unit in Rhetoric, and I feel like it was a very good introduction to rhetorical thinking. Rhetoric is often used in a negative context, but in this class, we learned how it can be successful and how it can help people. I think the hardest part of this action project was getting into the candidate's mind. Though we both have some overlapping beliefs, not all of them matched up, so I had to change some of my personal opinions to write this speech. I hope you have enjoyed my project, thank you for listening.
