For 7 years, from when I was 8 years old to when I was 15 years old, I was a camper at Chicago Kids Company Theatre Camp, and it was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I used to be shy and scared to do anything even close to public speaking, but being in such a supportive setting, I not only came out of my shell, I also made lifelong friends.

The last day of camp! MDS (2017) |
Although I was too old this year to be a camper, I got the opportunity this year to volunteer as a counselor. Seeing all of my old friends, who had also graduated camp the year before, and being back in one of my favorite places in the world, allowed me to, I hope, inspire the next generation of theatre campers and help them get over their fears, the same ones I had when I started. This year was also very special to me, as I had the opportunity to run the soundboard and be stage manager for the week spent at the Stahl Theatre, for practice and ultimately the final performances.
Running sound was a challenge, but practicing along with the actors felt like I was back on stage, and when a cue went perfectly, it was the best feeling in the world. I also got to learn a new and important skill that I very much hope to use in the future, maybe even again at Chicago Kids Company, which has become a second home to me over the years.
