This unit, Surgery, in our STEAM class Cure, we learned about the body at all levels: organ systems, organs, tissues, and cells. We also discussed in which cases surgery should or can be used, and how surgery takes place. We learned about the recovery process and which problems in the human body that surgery can help. For our Action Project, we each chose a surgery and described how it effects each level of the body and why it is important to use. I decided to research TOP Surgery, which is a type of Gender Reassignment Surgery for the chest. I chose this because even though it is a very important surgery that can save lives and allows everyone to feel comfortable in their bodies, it is seldom talked about, and many people don't know how it works. One of the problems I faced during this project was with the 'organ systems' slide because TOP surgery affects many systems of the body. I eventually decided on the integumentary system, because the organs that the surgery focus on are the skin and breasts.
