Pineapple Perfection!

How do you design sustainably and attuned to nature? That is the question we are attempting to answer in this Elective Term class, Biomimicry. In this unit, we are focusing our attention on plants, nature's producers, and designing a product based on a specific plant. To learn more about different plant species and how they have adapted, we visited the Lincoln Park Conservatory to observe and draw different plants. We also visited the company Interface, a flooring company that designs their products to be sustainable, reuseable, recyclable and based on nature. In this Action Project, we designed products for the world that addressed at least one of the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals, a set of goals set to be accomplished by 2030. I hope you enjoy!

During this project, I learned so much more about a plant that I see everyday, but knew almost nothing about. It was so valuable to me to be able to apply those fun facts about the pineapple to a real human problem that affects billions of people around the world. Going back to our roots and observing how nature solves its problems is one of the best ways for humans to solve our very pressing issues, and can help save lives, not only human. I hope more people and companies start to look at biomimicry as a life-saving and innovative tool in the future and I will definitely continue to study different incredible organisms as I move forward.
