The Homework Helper

In this unit, Time, in our STEAM class Light, Sound, and Time, we studied how we measure time, the advancements we've made in measuring it, and how we can calculate it in many different ways, including longitude, latitude, angles of shadows, the Doppler effect, and time dilation. Our Field Experience this unit was talking with Taylor Hoyt, an astrophysics graduate student from the University of Chicago. It was an amazing experience to ask him our crazy questions about space, time, and our universe and he was a very knowledgeable source. For this Action Project, our goal was to design our own unique time-keeping device and create an Info-mercial for it. I created a timer designed to help kids get into good habits for homework, as I had a lot of trouble sitting still and focusing when I was younger. I hope you enjoy!

Why is my machine better?
Though I drew my inspiration from Rube Goldberg's famous machines, my machine is much better for this purpose. Rube Goldberg was famous for his machines that took dozens and dozens of steps to get to the final purpose, which is very fun and interesting, but not right for something that needs to be consistent and easy to reset. My machine is still fun and interesting, but easier to use and understand, as it measures in simple minutes and seconds, and can be reset in just three steps.

Rate Cont.
Because there are 15 carriers on the conveyor and a complete circle is made no matter the time limit, it means the rate=time/15. This can then be converted to time=rate*15, and rate=time/15.

This project was very challenging for me. In a lot of ways, it felt like every single time-keeping device had already been invented, as humans have been keeping time for tens of thousands of years. Eventually, I realized I had to focus on the things that I, personally, would like out of a clock and try to design something that I would actually use. I enjoyed making the video, as it was fun to draw each part, but it was very difficult to find the right program to edit it and add the voiceover. I decided to refilm it on my iPad, so I would not have to transfer the video file from my phone to my computer, which was causing a lot of issues. Thank you for watching!
